What does “value for money really mean” when it comes to a safari?

Well the simple answer is that when it comes to Africa, it doesn’t mean it is cheap! Mid-range safari lodges can cost $1,000 per person per night and so feeling like you are getting good “value” can be as elusive as a leopard. Planning a trip that you walk away from feeling like you got great value for money is one thing, feeling like you would have paid so much more for the experience you just had because it was that good, is entirely what we aim to achieve with our tailor-made holidays.

We recently planned a trip for a family of 4 celebrating a 70th birthday to Tanzania and managed to get what we think is exceptional value for money. The holiday started with a night in Arusha pre-safari, 5 nights on the Northern Circuit in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, and a final 5 nights on the Southern Circuit in Ruaha and Selous. We wanted to give a varied experience that was both authentic and had little touches of luxury, especially when it came to fantastic guiding and wonderful in-camp service, and we know that can come at a premium! We took advantage of some of the circuit rate offers available with Nomad and Asilia camps, and we combined this by choosing the last week of May before peak season in the North, which coincided with the lower rates in June in the South. In addition, we picked companies that waived solo supplements for the first single room in the group booking. The result was we saved the family a little over £14k versus the exact same trip 4 weeks later. Yes there is a small chance of rain in the North, but as the weather is rarely reliable these days, we (and they) felt it was worth the risk, particularly as the vehicles have pop-up roofs so they can be closed should a little rain come over for an hour! The safari itself wasn’t what anyone would call cheap, but it goes to show what a little planning and a lot of knowledge can achieve and we know for a fact that they will love it!

Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp game drive

Here’s my top tips for chasing the bang for the buck:

Top Tip 1

Look at shoulder seasons – yes we know it is “supposed” to be the best during peak season, but honestly a couple of weeks either side of peak season will be just as good and sometimes more than 30% lower in cost. Being clever about the itinerary can mean huge savings, which we always suggest using to go for longer.

Some of our favourites shoulder seasons to look out for:

Botswana is great in May and June plus you can combine a visit with Victoria Falls and the water levels are still good

Namibia – we love June and October

Kenya and Northern Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire) – January and February experience a short dry season making them a great option and far less busy than peak season

Southern Tanzania (Ruaha & Nyerere) – these parks reopen in June after the rains with off season rates

South Africa – October and April are both great weather and low rates

Top Tip 2

Take advantage of free nights – some lodges offer a stay 4 pay 3 special, or the equivalent 25% off if you stay 4 nights or more and this is the best way to maximise your time on safari, and make the most of the cost of flights to get there. You’ll still need to pay the park fees for the extra night, but these are minimal compared to the cost of the accommodation and for just a little extra, you get a lot more back. They aren’t always applicable in high season, but this means there is even more saving to be had by going either side of those peak months.

Great free night offers:

Ol Seki in the Masai Mara, Kenya offer a stay 3 pay 2 which we love

Nasikia Camps offer a range of stay and pay offers depending on which camps you use and by combining Tarangire with the Serengeti you can really benefit here

Selous Safari Company offer a fantastic stay 4 pay 3, stay 7 pay 5 and even stay 10 pay 7 rate across three of their properties in the Southern circuit of Tanzania which also includes their beach property on Fanjove Island

&Beyond offer a stay 4 pay 3 at Kleins Camp and Serengeti Grumeti River Lodge in Tanzania, and at Kichwa Tembo in Kenya’s Masai Mara – these are lovely upmarket properties that then cost the same as the next class down once the offer is applied

Elephants Eye Tented Camp – Book 3 nights in Hwange and get 2 nights free at Ilala Lodge in Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge / Club in Zimbabwe – Stay 3 pay 2 in March when the water levels are high and mighty

Cape Grace in Cape Town, South Africa – 25% discount on stays of 5 nights or more meaning you get a stay 5 pay 4!

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge

Top Tip 3

Snap up a circuit rate offer – now these have to be seen to be believed sometimes! Many safari lodge companies own multiple properties and they have fantastic circuit rate offers available if you stay in more than one of their camps, so some careful planning can mean you get much more time on safari for your budget than if you had used different camps which would eat up your budget on far less days. These are particularly good when you want to stay for an extended period of time across more than one camp, as the long stay rates kick in throughout the circuit.

Awesome circuit rates:

Nomad – stay 5 nights or more at a combination of Nomad’s camps to unlock special offers and curated circuits

Asilia properties offer up to 15% off when you stay 5 nights or more at any combination of properties in Tanzania

&Beyond – Fly Me Round Botswana and Fly Me for a Fixed Price in Botswana or South Africa are two offers that & Beyond have packaged for you that mean you can save over a whopping 30% on packaging it separately, and by combining with a shoulder season rate can mean even further savings

Natural Selection offer 20% discount when you stay 5 nights or more at any of their camps in Botswana

Top Tip 4

Look out for honeymoon offers – a lot of properties offer a huge discount if you are on your honeymoon (and yes you have to prove it) which can allow you to enjoy significantly more time on safari!

Honeymoon offers not to miss:

Savanna Lodge in the Sabi Sands, South Africa offer 50% off for one partner

Ol Seki in the Masai Mara, Kenya offer 50% off for one partner

Lemala Camps offer 50% off for the bride and a first night ‘on us’ for the groom for a minimum 5-night-stay across their Northern Tanzanian camps

The Saruni Collection in Kenya offer 50% off for the bride when booking more than 4 nights in the Masai Mara and Samburu

Kwando Safari camps in Botswana – up to 75% off for the bride and the groom can still benefit from long stay offers

Top Tip 5

Search for solo travel offers – whether this is a small group tour without a single supplement or a safari camp that doesn’t charge a premium for solo travellers, they do exist and can save 30%. These can change all the time, so let us search these out for you and we’ll do our best to find you a good deal!

Top Tip 6

Look for camps with great child rates and those with extended age ranges. Some camps and lodges consider children over 15 to be an adult, but others go up to 19, which with a 50% rate reduction can make a big difference to a family.

As you can see, there’s a lot that goes into planning an African trip and whilst we would always try to work to a comfortable budget, we may also suggest spending a little to get an awful lot more bang for your buck!

We hope to see you in Africa soon!

Now that travel has opened up and getting out into the world is a little easier, a lot of people are thinking about an African Safari for 2023 as they seek out rich experiences rather than just a holiday.

Many of our guests ask “where should I go for my first safari” or “where is the best place to go on safari” or even “when is the best time to go on safari” The answer is unsurprisingly not that simple – if it were we wouldn’t exist!

My answer is that your first safari will be amazing no matter where or when you go – it’s all in the planning. If you can go at any time of year then that leaves it wide open for choice, but if you can’t for whatever reason (work, school holidays, family commitments etc) then let’s start with when you can go and work backwards. We try to avoid the long rainy seasons in most countries unless you are looking for a super bargain and don’t mind the odd afternoon thunderstorm. Some parks get too boggy during these times so are in fact closed.

The peak seasons can be expensive and busy, sometimes costing double what it would a week or two before or after – so it all comes down to good planning! Budget plays a key part in working out what your first or best safari will look like. If you want to go all out and book that once-in-a-lifetime trip with a healthy budget, then your options are fairly open so your choice then becomes very personal about what you want your experience to be. If you are more limited on budget, we can advise different ways to get the most out of what you want to spend, which may include nabbing a shoulder season special, joining a small group tour, looking at self-drive options, or choosing a destination like South Africa which offers a lot of value for the quality of safari you can achieve.

Of course, some people already have their “must-do” list of destinations and experiences – the migration across the rivers between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, the Ngorongoro Crater, the Okavango Delta, a hot air balloon flight, the Kruger Park, gorilla trekking – the list goes on. Our job is to work out what is the best experience we think you can get for your budget, when you want to travel, and in what style suits you.

Every type of safari destination offers a slightly different experience. National Parks often mean you cannot go offroad and there are more vehicles at sightings, but they are also home to some of the world’s most iconic places and sightings. The more remote you go into National Parks, the higher the cost because of the bush flights involved in getting to your destination and the premium you pay at each lodge for being so remote with low footprint tourism. Private game reserves offer a really special experience with some off-roading to get you as close to wildlife sightings as possible, and these reserves are especially good if they are unfenced to National Parks to allow for natural traversing.

Vehicle type also varies wildly between destinations – you may have a closed vehicle with a pop-up roof in the Ngorongoro Crater, and a completely open vehicle with no roof in the Greater Kruger. This might be a consideration if you are travelling with small children, or you may not be concerned at all unless you have a certain picture in your mind of what your first safari will look like.

Accommodation style and standard is often something we talk a lot about with our guests as we plan trips. Some people love unfenced tented camps, others love bricks and mortar lodges, some even request bedrooms with no thatching as that will help them sleep better. We do not judge – we just help you navigate the different options (and price tags) so that not only is the safari excellent, but you get that feeling of joy every time you walk into your room. Our main aim is to make sure the guiding is excellent as this makes or breaks your safari experience, but there is no reason you can’t also feel super happy about where you are staying too!

And finally, whilst we do love a good safari, there is so much else to see nearby that we encourage all our guests to think about book-ending your safari with another wow experience, simply because it is right there waiting for you. This might include Victoria Falls, the vineyards of the Western Cape, whale watching in Hermanus, snorkelling with whale sharks in Mafia, dipping your toes in the white sands of Zanzibar beaches, or the stunning views on the Panorama Route in South Africa. Our small group tours often provide inspiration for our tailor-made adventures as they suggest what a great itinerary looks like for you.

Many people think of their first safari as their only safari, because it is assumed to be the one time they will do a trip like that. One of our most recent guests messaged me after she had landed back in the UK to tell me “It was meant to be my ‘trip of a lifetime’, now I’m wondering where you will send me next”.

We think you should feel that way about every trip you take to Africa, not just your first!

So, you’re booked into your exciting African group tour adventure and the only thing left to do is to pack. Often, this is when the excitement really starts to build, but so too does the confusion of what to add into your suitcase and what to leave at home. To help you out, here is our guide for what to pack for your travel in Africa.

The Basics

Most avid travellers swear by the beauty of packing light, and this is a principle that certainly applies for travel in Africa. Although there’s no harm in adding a few home comforts to your suitcase, you also want to make sure that your luggage is easy to carry and store so you can spend less time worrying about your belongings, and more time focusing on the adventures!

Plus, it leaves more room for the great souvenirs you can pick up in the stores and markets at your destination. If you absolutely do not want to compromise and pack light, just be aware of the internal flight weight limits on luggage and if you end up buying too much you’ll just have to add an extra bag at check-in!

One hot tip for packing for your African group travel adventure is to make sure your bag is well organised so that you can easily find what you want, even if it’s an early morning start in the darkness. We love packing cubes for this as they are a great way to separate tops , shorts and trousers, although one recent guest used them to separate outfits by destination – top marks for planning so well in advance!

It’s also a good idea to devise a plan for keeping dirty and clean clothes separate – although you’ll get plenty of chances to wash your clothes, you don’t want the dirty items all mixed up with the clean ones in your suitcase.

Clothing

Despite what you may have seen on television, there’s really no need to arrive in Africa dressed like David Attenborough or Steve Irwin! Of course, if safari chic is a look you want to try out, go right ahead – but for most people, comfy casual will be just fine. ‘Comfy’ is definitely the operative word for when you are on safari, as you want to wear clothing that is comfortable whether you’re seated in a jeep for a few hours. Ladies – a sports bra could become your best friend in these scenarios as it can get a little bumpy! We recommend wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics, and some sturdy shoes that will protect your feet from both the elements and blisters. Whatever shoes you pick, be sure to wear them for a few days before you set off on your big adventure so they are worn in before you go!

Depending on what season you’re visiting in and what you’ll be doing, you may also need to bring some warm clothes. Don’t be fooled into thinking that Africa is hot 24/7, 365 days per year – it can get very cold overnight, especially in places like the Ngorongoro Crater rim or Cape Town during winter, so you will definitely want the odd jumper, even if it is just for the early morning game drives before the sun warms up.

If you’re travelling during wet season (or planning a trip to Vic Falls during high water), a light rain jacket or a pocket poncho is also a good idea!

There’s no reason you can’t show off your personal style while on safari, however we recommend avoiding bright colours as they can scare off the animals. Muted tones such as pastels and beiges (see, a little bit of a Steve Irwin influence!) are good options. Some African countries are quite conservative, so it’s a good idea to check on the customs of the country you are visiting and if that’s the case then keep tops covering the shoulders and bottoms covering the knees. A shawl can definitely come in handy for adding a little bit of modesty to any outfit, plus it can keep you warm or add a pop of colour. If you don’t already have one at home, many African markets sell gorgeous colourful fabrics which make stunning shawls, as well as great souvenirs. Shawls can also be useful for a bit of sun protection or you may want to throw in a lightweight shirt to keep the sun from burning your shoulders, particularly on a river safari where shade is almost non-existent.

One of our groups on an all day safari – the clothing was comfy and layered for all weather changes!

We do recommend keeping your favourite jewellery safe at home especially if it is valuable to avoid the risk of something getting lost, damaged or stolen. There is usually a safe in every hotel so if you cannot bear to leave it at home then there is a level of security, we just know how upsetting it can be to lose a trusty favourite.

You might also want to add in one nice ‘going out’ outfit into your bag, so you can glam it up a bit when visiting more metropolitan places such as Cape Town. After a few days on safari, it can be a nice feeling to slip into something stylish, however if you’d prefer to keep the relaxed holiday vibe going, that’s fine too.

Toiletries

It is absolutely possible to pick up pretty much all essentials such as toothpaste, shampoo and hand sanitisers from stores in most African countries, especially near tourist areas. However, expect the range to be quite limited in smaller towns, so if you have specific brands or needs, it may be better to bring them from home.

If you can’t go without your beauty products (a safari can be a great opportunity to go au naturel), you might also like to bring your favourite products from home. Again, while you can find bits and pieces in the stores in Africa, it’s probably safer to bring your own products from home to avoid breakouts or makeup disasters. Likewise, you might want to bring a stash of your own feminine hygiene products since those supplies tend to be pretty limited as well.

One absolute must have for everybody is plenty of good insect repellant. Forget about lions, the most dangerous (and annoying) animal in Africa is the pesky mosquito, so you’ll want to keep them at bay. Be sure to pick up some that is right for you, and if you can’t stand the tropical strength insect repellants on the market, we love love love Incognito as a brand of natural repellants and find for us they work really well. Either way get ready to apply it liberally every day. Likewise, add on a good layer of sunscreen to avoid any painful sunburn ruining your fun and photographs!

Gadgets and Gizmos

Sticking with our plan of packing light, we recommend avoiding the temptation to throw in every whizz-bang electronic you own ‘just in case’. However, there are a few essential gadgets that should probably make their way into your suitcase.

A camera is a definite must, since the photographic opportunities in Africa are truly mesmerising. Don’t be surprised if you suddenly turn into a photography enthusiast, even if it’s never interested you before! While zoom lenses and DSLRs are a favourite of camera pros, a good point and shoot with a decent zoom lens is good too. A smart phone can do in a pinch, although the zoom can be limited to get those great wildlife close-ups. We are big fans of the Panasonic Lumix TZ60-TZ90 range as they pack a punch when it comes to zoom but are small and compact to carry.

You’ll probably also want to bring something like a phone or tablet for staying in touch with friends and family and posting your amazing safari snaps! WiFi is pretty widespread in most of Africa, although it may be a tad (or a lot) slower than you’re used to. You can also consider picking up a local SIM card if you’re staying in one spot for a while and looking for a cheap way to stay in touch.

Binoculars might be a quintessential part of any safari get-up, don’t worry if you don’t have any to bring with you. As a special welcome to Africa, we like to include these as a gift for those on our group tours – meaning you’ll be ready for those closeups of the amazing safari sights. They really are a must for all African safaris!

If you’re heading out for some independent travel but don’t want to spend too much on your own pair of binocs, check out the Helios Sport Deluxe 10×25 .

To keep everything charged and ready to go, we recommend bringing a multiple USB charger and if you have lots of things to plug in also bring a small extension lead or a multi-plug, as this means you’ll only need one mains adaptor per country (or a universal one) and there a few different types of plugs are in use in Africa. In a push, you can pick these up in most tourist towns, but we do recommend bringing your own.

Money

Another essential is a way to access your money, as this can be a little more difficult than you may be used to at home. There are definitely ATMs in Africa, but other than South Africa, they are not as abundant as many Western countries and some of them may not actually have cash in them! Therefore, we recommend bringing some cash (kept in a secure pocket of your bag), as well as a couple of cards. It is useful if these cards are different – I.e. a Visa and a Mastercard – as not all ATMs or EFTPOS machines accept both types. Plus, it’s good to have a backup option if you lose one. We also like the currency cards that are out on the market these days which allow you to load your spending money ahead of time, then withdraw or spend as you go and keep track of the transactions in an app.

Other Useful Essentials

There’s a few little things we would recommend throwing in if you have some room. A pocket torch is extremely useful as most people are surprised by how dark it gets both in the bush and some of the smaller towns. We also love a good splash proof bag (think old school swimming bags) to keep your things dry in case of rain or for visiting waterfalls. A good book is great to enjoy during the day between game drives (or a kindle if you are an avid reader to get more books packed into less space). Finally – don’t forget a sun hat / cap of some kind as the African sun can be pretty strong!

Final Thoughts

Don’t worry – everyone who books onto a group tour receives our ideal packing list and lots of advice. – it’s what we are here for!

You really don’t have to take anything special or spend lots of money if you don’t want to! If you just want to book and go, you can turn up in Africa with the basics of your existing wardrobe, toiletries and an adapter so you can keep things charged. We don’t believe in unnecessary spending on top of your trip, but we do want everyone to have the best trip they can so for you if that means just rocking up, then you’ll be fine. If you enjoy the extra bit of shopping to get some new bits and bobs and want an excuse for a new gadget here or there, then go for it! Looking perfect and having the perfect stuff is not what will make your trip the best holiday you’ve ever had…it’s about you being there in the first place!

Africa is a continent that is simply brimming with natural beauty and amazing wildlife, with a seemingly endless list of potential safari destinations. Amazingly, each country, region and national park offers something different: from navigating the waters of the Okavanga Delta in Botswana to scanning the endless plains of the Serengeti in Namibia. Perhaps one of the most unique experiences of all, however, is in the jaw dropping Ngorongoro Crater.

The Basics

The Ngorongoro Crater is located in Tanzania, about four hours from the town of Arusha, in the Central Highlands of the country. As one of Tanzania’s premier tourist destinations, the Tanzanian Government carefully conserves the area through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The Crater is, as the name suggests, a volcanic crater that was created when a large volcano erupted and the pressure of the explosion caused it to collapse on itself some 2 million plus years ago. The result is a vast “dent” in the landscape, creating a sort of bowl that is filled with flora and fauna.

What makes the Ngorongoro Crater so special?

The name of the Crater roughly translates from the local Masai language as “the gift of life”, and within moments of entering the expansive park you’ll see why. Although it is the largest intact, inactive volcanic crater on the planet, it is still relatively modest in size, covering 260 square kilometers in total. Within those 260 square kilometres, there are more than 25,000 large animals (think elephants, lions and hyenas). This means that the density of wildlife is absolutely incredible – it is almost impossible to gaze over the landscape without seeing dozens of animals. While, for the most part, the animals co-exist peacefully, you can also expect to see the cycle of life in action with plenty of hunts and fights, as well as birthing of animals. The birdlife is fantastic with more than 200 species within the Crater and we love the hundreds of pink flamingos that flock here.

Not only does the Crater offer spectacular wildlife viewing, but the environment itself is incredibly beautiful. The crater is about 610 meters deep, and the views over it are spectacular, with beautiful green hues stretching out far in front of you. It is well worth getting up early in the morning to see the sun rise over the stunning landscape.

What can you see in the Ngorongoro Crater?

Those in search of the Big 5 will not be disappointed by a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, as it is home to each of those animals and far more. In fact, it is easier to describe what animals you can’t see the in the Crater than to provide a list of those you can! It is really only alligators, giraffes and impalas who cannot be found in the Crater.

Perhaps most significantly, the Ngorongoro Crater is home to one of the largest concentrated population of lions in East Africa.

It is estimated that there are 62 lions that call the Crater home, so it’s almost impossible not to see one. Even the lions’ prey, such as zebras and gazelles, seem to have gotten used to them – it’s not unusual to see a group of zebra relaxing within easy grabbing distance of the King of the Jungle (and the Crater).

There is also a huge swamp within the Ngorongoro Crater, which creates an ecosystem for animals such as hippopotamuses, buffalo, lions and more. This is one of the best and most popular spots for lunch – imagine eating surrounded by some of the world’s most incredible creature – who hopefully aren’t hungry themselves!

Other animals that are less frequently seen in the Crater include African wild dogs, cheetahs and leopards do live in the Crater, however you’ll need to keep your eyes peeled to spot them as they are quite rare. Luckily, experienced guides are skilled in finding the best places to see these incredible creatures.

When is the perfect time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater?

One of the most amazing things about visiting natural wonders such as the Ngorongoro Crater is how it changes with the seasons: you could visit every month of the year and have a slightly different experience. As such, there is no “bad” time to see the Crater.

The most popular time to visit is June to September, when wildlife viewing is generally the best and the weather is typically dry and warm. October is also a dry, warm month that offers plenty of opportunities to see amazing wildlife. If you don’t mind a little rain, however, the wet season – from November to May – is also a good time to visit as the rainfall makes the Crater incredibly lush and green. January and February is a particularly special time, when there is mass wildebeest calving.

If you want to miss the crowds, April and May are the ‘least popular’ times to visit the Crater, meaning you will have more space to yourself – but you may want to pack a poncho as it does rain quite frequently! Whatever time of year you visit, make sure you get up early to see the sunrise, as watching the sun ascend over the lush crater is surely one of the most incredible sights on the planet. If you only have one early morning start during your African holiday, make it while you are in the Crater!

It is typical to leave the Crater having been bitten by the ‘safari bug’ (figuratively, not literally!) and the Ngorongoro Crater can easily be combined with visits to other fantastic safari destinations in Tanzania. Lake Manyara is about 90 minutes away, and the famed Serengeti is also nearby.

Where to stay

Your budget will certainly help to dictate this one!

If you have an unlimited budget for the ultimate luxury, we recommend the &beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, which has stunning views, fabulous food, and deems itself an “Award winning lodge fit for a king and queen on the edge of the Crater”.

From dining in the bush to tasting mopani worms, there’s certainly a lot of variety when it comes to food in South Africa…here’s our guide to the local delicacies you’re likely to encounter on your African Adventure…

South Africa is a diverse blend of cultures which is reflected across its music, art, language and – of course – its food! With varied African, Dutch, Malaysian and Indian flavours (to name just a few), Afrikaans cooking is both unique and delicious. All over the country, there are hundreds of humble cafes and upscale restaurants serving both traditional South African dishes and more modern, innovative styles. It is no wonder that South African cuisine is fast gaining a great international reputation.

Biltong

One of the most popular snacks in South Africa is the ever present Biltong, or dried, cured meat. Beef is a popular choice, however those looking for something a bit more adventurous may like to try kudu or ostrich. The good news is you won’t have to look far to find Biltong – it’s sold at nearly every grocery store, corner stall or petrol station.

You might also find more modern, upmarket versions at restaurants or can even be paired with wine at tastings. Whichever one you try, it’s a definite must!

Pap

Many African countries use cooked maize meal as a staple side dish for meals, and South Africa is no exception. Known as ‘ugali’ or ‘sadza’ elsewhere, the South African name is the simple “pap”. It is a type of firm porridge, that is cooked by boiling maize meal in either milk or water, and stirring continuously (chefs in South Africa must have strong arms from this task!). It can be eaten as a side for dishes such as curries, or there is also a breakfast version similar to porridge. Be warned – it can look a lot like mash potato when served with dinner and for those who are potato lovers you might be very disappointed when you discover it is pap!

Boerewors

A piri piri boerewors by Andy Roberts

A classic favourite at barbecues (or braais as they say in South Africa) and hearty breakfasts, boerewors is a delicious sausage – the name translates from Afrikaans from ‘farmer’s sausage’. It is prepared carefully, containing at least 90% meat which has no more than 30% fat. The meat is also spiced with additional flavours such as pepper and coriander. The sausages can be eaten on their own, or in a fried bun with generous helpings of onion and condiments.

Bobotie

A classic Cape Malay dish, Bobotie is a mouthwatering version of the humble shepherd’s pie that has been part of traditional South African cuisine since the 1600s. Made from beef mince and cooked in a delicious spicy and sweet curry sauce and topped off with an egg and milk mix, it is baked in the oven and then served warm. It’s a quintessential crowd-pleaser and cannot be missed while in South Africa!

Chakalaka

Not only is this dish fun to say, but it’s also delicious to eat! A type of vegetable relish, it is thought that this dish originated in Johannesburg, where miners from Portuguese-ruled Mozambique would cook tinned vegetables such as tomatoes with chili, which created a tasty, Portuguese-inspired dish that went well with pap. Today there are many different recipes that include various spices and you will often see it on the menu as an accompaniment.

Braaivleis / Shisa Nyama

Not just a cooking style but a cultural institution, South Africans love barbecues! Many classic South African dishes are prepared over the traditional braai, where meats and other dishes are grilled over open coals. Often these meals are accompanied with dishes such as boerwors, and simple grilled meats such as steaks and kebabs (known locally as sosaties) are also popular. There are many upmarket restaurants where you can get a taste of the braaivleis experience – and even try some unique meats such as ostrich or buffalo.

Denningvleis

Thought to be one of the oldest South African dishes, denningvleis is a classic that is served in dining rooms and restaurants across the country. It is a spicy lamb stew that is made with a mixed spice marinade drawn from Cape Malay. The marinade is both spicy and sour as a result of the generous addition of tamarind, and the end result is an aromatic, tasty dish that should not be missed while in South Africa!

Potjiekos

This is the perfect choice if you are looking for a hearty meal, or want a traditional dish that can be prepared outdoors. The name translates to “small-pot food”, as the key to authentic potjiekos is that it is prepared in a traditional Dutch Oven, usually over an open fire. The dish usually includes meat and various vegetables, seasoned sparingly with different spices and often with an alcoholic beverage (such as beer) added. It’s a classic favourite with every family and restaurant having their own special recipes for the perfect potjiekos.

Vetkoek

Translating literally as “fat cake”, vetkoek are fried balls of dough which are filled with yummy fillings. The fillings can be savoury, such as spiced meats, or there are sweet versions where the fried balls of dough are filled with jam or fruit, or lathered in syrup or jam. They are readily available in South Africa, sometimes seen as a breakfast food, but often accompany traditional braais.

Malva Pudding

A favourite dessert served in most restaurants and every South African grandmother’s kitchen, malva pudding is one for the sweet tooth’s! It traditionally has a sweet, butter-soaked spongy interior cased in a caramelised exterior, before a liberal amount of cream sauce is poured all over it. The end result is a sweet, rich cake that will have you asking for seconds! Be sure to try it at one of the many cafes or restaurants all over the country.

So enjoying them is not only a culinary experience that should not be missed, but a cultural one too! Just remember to pack some trousers in the next size up!

There’s something about whales that makes them almost universally loved. Perhaps it’s their surprising grace for such enormous creatures, or their haunting songs that ripple under the ocean – or perhaps it’s the show they seemingly put on for people as they play off of the earth’s coast. One of the best places to see this show for yourself is along South Africa’s Garden Route during the annual whale migration.

The Garden Route & the whale migration?

The Garden Route is on the southern coast of South Africa, and is a popular route for road trippers and adventure-seekers all year round. It is dotted with many beautiful natural sights, picturesque small towns and foodie hot spots. The route officially covers approximately 300km, from Port Elizabeth in the Western Cape, to Mossel Bay in the Eastern Cape, but as most people start or end in Cape Town it is generally used to describe the overall area in between there and Mossel Bay as well.

The R44 coastal road on the Garden Route – by Christopher Griner

Although the Garden Route is stunning all year round, there is an added bit of magic and charisma during the whale migration, when hundreds of whales leave the chilly waters of Antarctica in search of warmer respite off the shores of Cape Town. As a result, visitors to the Garden Route during whale season have the opportunity to see dozens – even more – whales, playing and swimming off of the coast. This is also the time when many baby whales are calved – another incredible experience. Whales have a long migration period in South Africa, which also coincides with wildflower season – all in all creating a mesmerising time to visit this beautiful part of the world.

When is Whale Season?

Helpfully, whale season is almost six months long in South Africa, running between June and November each year. The peak time to visit is during spring (September and October), when the weather is beautiful and the whales are particularly active. Even better, the main whale season coincides with wildflower season, meaning the always-pretty Garden Route is absolutely spectacular. It is worth noting that some whales – such as orcas – may be spotted off South Africa’s coast year-round. So, even if you happen to miss whale season – you might still get lucky and catch a glimpse of one of these incredible creatures off the southern coast of South Africa.

What whales can you see in South Africa?

There are many different species of whales that can be sighted off the south coast during the whale migration near the Garden Route. One of the most commonly sighted species is the spectacular Southern Right Whale, which can grow up to 15m in length and is a deep, charcoal colour. Their size is truly astonishing – a fully grown Southern Right Whale can weigh as much as eight elephants. You know you have spotted a Southern Right Whale if you see ‘callosities’ on their heads – they look a bit like big barnacles, and are individually distinctive. The most commonly sighted of all is the Humpback Whale, who are generally headed for the warm waters of Madagascar and Mozambique, which are their breeding grounds of choice. They are similarly enormous, frequently measuring in at lengths of 16m or more. Other sea life that are commonly seen include terrifying yet spectacular Great White Sharks (perhaps close your eyes if you’re scared of Jaws!), adorable African Penguins and playful Cape Fur Seals. Dolphins are often also spotted, and if you’re lucky you may even spot a shy yet gigantic Bryde’s Whale (pronounced ‘brewdus’).

What are the best places to see whales along the Garden Route?

The Garden Route offers many opportunities to stop and enjoy the natural beauty of South Africa. If you’re specifically looking for stops with the best chances to see elegant whales in action, here are some of our favourite places:

Hermanus: known as the whale capital of South Africa, there is a beautiful coastal path that gives ample opportunity to see these amazing creatures really close to the shore, but if you fancy getting up close and personal with them there are several reputable whale watching boat trips for you to join.

Mossel Bay: to the Eastern Cape side of the route lies Mossel Bay, which is also one of the premier spots for whale watching. If you have a little more time, it is also possible to do a daytrip to nearby Seal Island, where you can see (as the name suggests) seals, as well as have a great vantage spot to look for whales and dolphins.

Plettenburg Bay: this seaside spot is pretty confident – it also calls itself the “whale capital”, just like Hermanus. It’s no wonder, because the Bay is a great place to spot whales as well as other playful sea life. The bay is also home to many other water activities and a selection of great cafes and restaurants to enjoy.

Wilderness: a small, seaside town near to Knysna (more on that soon), Wilderness is a peaceful village with abundant natural beauty – and some great whale watching! In particular, the Map of Africa viewpoint is a great vantage point to look out for migrating or nursing sea life.

Knysna: a well know stop not far from Mossel Bay, Knysna is well-loved for its panoramic views out over the ocean – and therefore out over the whales’ territory! Venture to the lookouts at The Heads, Brenton-on-Sea and Noetzie for the best chances of spotting marine life.

All of these spots offer the opportunity to see whales from the coast, however there is also the option to go out by boat in the hopes of spotting these majestic creatures. These boat journeys depart from several stops along the Garden Route and know how to avoid stressing the whales so as to make it a good experience for you, and the wildlife!

Final Thoughts

Whales have a special place in the hearts of so many people, and the opportunity to see them close up – perhaps with calves in tow – is truly a dream come true for many. If this is you, look no further than South Africa’s beautiful Garden Route, which provides ample opportunity to stop and take in beautiful views out over the ocean and hopefully upon pods of playful sea mammals. Our Wonders of South Africa tour is the perfect way to take in this magical migration as well as the combining the beauty of the Garden Route with a fantastic safari experience in the Greater Kruger.

Zanzibar. Just the name is enchanting – and the place itself is even more so. Located just a short ferry trip from mainland Tanzania, life on Zanzibar is slower, but no less exciting. It is an island with a fascinating history, delicious food and unique culture that blends African and Arabic influences. And then, of course, there are the beaches – and they sure are delightful on Zanzibar.

The Basics

Zanzibar is ‘semi-autonomous’, meaning that although it is technically part of Tanzania, it is quite independent – in fact, you’ll need a different stamp in your passport to go there! It is made up of several small islands, although most visitors base themselves on the main island of Unguja. Unlike Tanzania itself, Zanzibar has a population that is nearly entirely Islamic. As a result, as well as the official Tanzanian language of Swahili, Arabic is also widely spoken. As tourism is a major industry for Zanzibar, most people in the hospitality industry also speak English – although a few words of the local dialect (‘jambo’ = hello) will always get a kind smile!

What to do in Zanzibar

A common phrase on Zanzibar is ‘pole, pole’, meaning ‘slowly, slowly’. It seems ‘island time’ is a phenomenon all over the world, so be sure to take a deep breath and relax as you set foot on Zanzibar. It’s a place best explored leisurely. That is not to say there is a shortage of things to do – far from it! Most visitors to Zanzibar arrive in Stone Town, the largest town on any of the Zanzibar islands. Located on Unguja, it is UNESCO World Heritage listed and extremely charming. It is a myriad of narrow, meandering streets with colonial architecture to each side. Be sure to keep an eye out for the famous doors that are beautifully ornate.

Although simply spending time walking the streets and enjoying the kind hospitality of the locals is lovely, there are also many activities to enjoy from Stone Town.

The island is famous for its spices, which have been one of Zanzibar’s main industries for hundreds of years. There are many tours where you can view the plantations and learn about the process for creating delicious spices. Many of these tours end with a traditional meal prepared with the spices you have just tried, and there are ample opportunities to buy spices as a souvenir of your trip to Zanzibar.

A more somber tour is to the historic Slave Market, a place where human beings were once traded. Zanzibar was once one of the largest slave ports in the Atlantic Ocean and the relics of this dark time are a moving sight in Stone Town. Another place to discover the history of Zanzibar is at the Palace Museum, which houses an interesting selection of artefacts relating to Zanzibar’s history. It is an excellent way to be introduced to the place, and begin to understand how different countries and religions have influenced modern Zanzibar.

Perhaps the most popular daytrip from Stone Town is to Prison Island. Not only does this place have an interesting history, having previously been a colonial hospital and a prison (hence the name), but perhaps most exciting is visiting the many giant tortoises that call the island home. The tortoises make for wonderful photo opportunities, but so too does the boat ride over the clear ocean.

Beyond Stone Town there is Nungwi, which is the second largest town in Zanzibar and also happens to boast some of the islands’ best swimming beaches, complete with white sand and beautiful azure waters. These beaches also offer watersports including kayaking, stand up paddle boarding and snorkelling. Nungwi also has its fair share of elegant nightlife, with nice restaurants and chic bars to enjoy. There is also a turtle sanctuary, and many dhow (traditional wooden boat) cruises, including to the nearby town of Kendwa. Kendwa itself is a beautiful, relaxing spot that is blessed with many gorgeous beaches – as is all of Zanzibar, really.

Where to eat in Stone Town

For a relatively small place, Zanzibar boasts an impressive selection of culinary delights. On the seafront you will discover the Forodhani Food Market, which is nestled along the seafront and is a bustling food market selling street food including seafood and freshly squeezed juice. There are also traditional dishes such as garlic chapatti and coconut bread.

Forodhani Gardens, Stone Town – by David Berkowitz

Another option for sampling authentic and delicious local food is at the popular restaurants Lukmaan Restaurant or Passing Show Hotel. Both are popular with both locals and visitors (so you know it must be good!). The restaurants are no-frills, however the food is delectable.

For a more upscale meal with a beautiful view, try Zanzibar Serena Inn or the Emerson Spice Café. Both serve up incredible seafood (as well as other dishes) with panoramic views over the ocean and excellent service.

If you are seeking a unique and unforgettable dining experience, look no further than The Rock, literally located (as the name would suggest) on a rock in the ocean, located around a 50-minute drive out of Stone Town but is most definitely worth the trek. Beautifully and tastefully renovated from a former fisherman’s hut, The Rock has just 12 tables that each have an amazing view. The seafood here is world famous, so it is advisable to book ahead.

Finally, don’t forget to stop by the famous Jaws Café, which is a local institution that serves delicious Zanzibar coffee. Not only is the coffee delicious, but the people watching is brilliant as the café is “the place” for locals to play board games and discuss anything and everything.

The Rock Restaurant, Zanzibar – by Rod Waddington

Final Thoughts

Just a short trip from the mainland, Zanzibar feels a world away from the bustling streets of Dar Es Salaam or the wide-open plains of the Serengeti. It boasts rich culture, delicious cuisine and of course, stunning beaches. It is the perfect place to get lost in – at least figuratively, although those streets can be a maze! – and simply enjoy the atmosphere of this special place. Whether it’s sipping coffee in a café in Stone Town or dipping your toes in the azure waters near Kendwa, you are sure to adore amazing Zanzibar.

The annual wildebeest migration is surely one of the most spectacular sights on the planet – the sight of almost two million wildebeest, gazelles and zebras migrating from the Serengeti in Tanzania to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Undoubtedly, the greatest wildlife drama on Earth is the Great Migration. Just like every great drama, the Migration is filled with suspense, heartache and vindication, as the animals make the perilous 1,800km journey. Although almost two million set out, they are followed closely by predators, and more than 250,000 wildebeest die during the migration.

Quite simply, it’s one of nature’s most incredible spectacles.

More than 1 million wildebeest move across the Serengeti and Masai Mara

If seeing the Great Migration is on your ‘must see’ list, you’re not alone. It is one of Africa’s biggest tourist draw cards, and many more people watch it via live stream online. Of course, actually seeing it in person is the premier way to experience the true magic of it.

When is the Great Migration?

Wildebeest continuously travel between Masai Mara and the Serengeti, so in reality the Great Migration is happening constantly, for most of the year. Their movements tend to follow a pattern, however in recent years extreme weather (such as a lack of rain in the Serengeti) have caused changes to their usual behaviour. It is therefore not possible to predict the path of the Great Migration with absolute certainty, but there are some general trends.

The Migration cycle begins in January, as calving season arrives in the south of Tanzania’s Serengeti and continues through to around March. During this time, tens of thousands of calves are born, making it a simply magical time to visit. However, it can also be a tragic time as weak calves are preyed upon by keen predators.

As the year progresses towards June, the wildebeest begin to head to the north of the Serengeti for the next phase of their migration. Generally, as July rolls around, the herd has begun to arrive in Kenya’s Masai Mara, and by August the wildebeest and accompanying giraffes and gazelles are hundreds of thousands strong in Kenya’s most famous National Park. By approximately November, the wildebeest again move south towards the Serengeti, in preparation to begin the calving season again in January. As such, it is possible to observe wildebeest migration all through the year, depending on where you are planning to safari – you may just want to plan when and where you travel based on the migration’s usual patterns.

What can you see during the Great Migration?

As mentioned, January and February in the southern part of the Serengeti brings calving season, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born in a span of just two months.

However, perhaps the most famous image of the Great Migration is that of wildebeests crossing the river en masse, hoping to escape the jaws of their major predator, the crocodile. In reality, water crossings are relatively rare, and enthusiasts may camp for days or even weeks to make sure they don’t miss a major crossing. However, you may be lucky – especially if you visit in between August and October, when there are the most river crossings. Of course, staying somewhere close to the river helps, and there are several great camps that are semi-permanent and move with the migration to give you the best shot at seeing this wonderful sighting.

The many crocodiles are just waiting to nab one of the many zebras and wildebeest crossing their path

Crocodiles are not the only predators who prey on the animals making the perilous migration. Other wildlife – including cheetahs, lions and leopards – similarly stalk the Great Migration, waiting for their chance to prey. This means that if you visit an area during its migration, there is a greater chance of seeing the circle of life at work. Of course, for every wildebeest that falls to their natural predators, many more make it safely to their destination. There is truly something awe-inspiring about that fact in itself.

So where to go – the Serengeti, or the Masai Mara?

Many people ask whether it is best to see the Migration in the Serengeti in Tanzania, or Kenya’s Masai Mara. Due to the cyclic nature of the Great Migration, if you have a particular time of year that you must visit and you are desperate to see it, the decision may be out of your hands. The good news is that both the Serengeti and Masai Mara are stunningly beautiful, and you will certainly not be disappointed by either!

If you have more flexibility and prefer to decide between the two parks, you may want to consider what kind of safari experience you’d like. The Serengeti is synonymous with safari – it was the first National Park to be awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status and it inspired the Lion King. It has wide, open savannahs dotted with trees and rocks, creating the quintessential safari landscape. The Serengeti also has the benefit of lying close to several other national parks – notably, the Ngorongoro Crater which is the world’s largest inactive volcanic crater and an incredible sight itself.

The resident pink flamingos in the Ngorongoro Crater – a definite must see if you are in the area!

On the other hand, the Masai Mara is smaller, which means the density of wildlife is greater. While in the Serengeti you may have to travel quite some distance in pursuit of wildlife, in Masai Mara the distances are likely to be shorter. In addition, Masai Mara is slightly quieter than the Serengeti, meaning less rival safari vehicles to compete for the best spots!

Another option is to see both – especially during the periods when the wildebeest are moving between the two (such as between August and October which is when our group tours run). Moving between the two parks is fairly straightforward, although it does mean entering both Kenya and Tanzania, and you can either take the expensive option and fly (c$550) or be driven across the border which may seem like the long-winded option, but when you consider that essentially you are doing an all-day game drive, we think it’s not so bad!

Some Final Thoughts

Almost everyone has seen videos and images from the Great Migration, however there is no experience like seeing it for real – feeling the rumble of hundreds of thousands of hooves and the sound of predators and prey facing off against one another. The journey is awash with suspense, heartbreak, and – for the lucky ones – victory as they make it safely to their next destination. It’s the circle of life at work, and whether you see it in Kenya’s Masai Mara or Tanzania’s Serengeti, it is sure to be an unforgettable and awe-inspiring experience.

The neighbourhoods of Cape Town are quite varied, however one of the safest areas to stay is the trendy Victoria & Alfred Waterfront area. This is a hub of great restaurants, many of which fuse traditional African flavours with other modern cuisines to create a unique and delicious style of cooking that is recognisably from the Western Cape. You’ll find many of the best bars and restaurants in this area – a delicious sushi feast at Willoughby and Co or a luxurious old-fashioned cocktail at Bascule is sure to go down especially well after your more rugged adventures. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent, we’re also slightly obsessed with the incredible seafood on offer at trendy Baia.

As the sun goes down, the party starts in vibrant Cape Town and there are a seemingly endless number of venues ready to welcome you. There’s the Sky Bar at Village Lodge, where you can sip your drink of choice while taking in the quintessential Cape Town view over Table Mountain, or alternatively if you prefer your venues a little more laid back, hit up Alba Lounge for some relaxed beverages and tasty tapas. Of course, if you prefer your reveling a little more raucous there’s plenty of those options too. Near to the Waterfront, our pick is the expansive Shimmy Beach Club. With the lofty aim of being a pool, nightclub, restaurant and beach all rolled into one, it really is a glamorous experience you have to try!

By day, there are many great cafes for a late brunch and invigorating juice (especially if you’re sporting a headache after your night out at the Waterfront). Half the fun is stumbling upon one that takes your fancy, however we love Tasha’s and the Chef’s Warehouse and Canteen if you’re not sure where to start. We’d also highly recommend the food market if you’re not sure what you fancy – not only is it well priced but the food is pretty great and there’s lots of variety to choose from.

Once you’ve checked out the Cape Town nightlife and gorged yourself on delicious, multicultural cuisine, it’s time to check out the attractions within and around the city. There’s certainly no shortage of them!

Cape Town boasts many beautiful green spaces so if you’re looking for some fresh air in the city, you’re in luck! A favourite is Kirstenbosch National Botanic Gardens, where you’ll find many relaxing trails, or it’s a great place to just take a book and a picnic and relax for an afternoon in the shade of Table Mountain (yeah, it’s pretty hard to get away from in Cape Town).

A little outside of Cape Town is Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, situated in the vast reaching Table Mountain National Park and features a gorgeous lookout over the cragged coast, and the most Southwestern point of the African continent. There’s also a picturesque lighthouse that once kept sailors safe as they navigated the rocky coasts. This is well worth a day trip out of the city and usually includes a drive via one of the most scenic routes in the world, as well as a stop at Boulders Bay which may not be the most spectacular beach in Cape Town, but the adorable penguins that live there more than make up for it!

To discover even more of what Cape Town has to offer, there’s a fun hop on hop off bus which will give you a good overview and orientation of the city and its major highlights. You might even find some hidden gems that you can return to later. There’s even a “wine route” that you can join which takes you through one of the nearest wine regions to the centre of the city, Constantia, allowing you to enjoy as much wine as you want without worrying about the drive!

If you do enjoy a glass of wine or two and want to see more of the famous wine regions, check out our blog on exploring the nearby Stellenbosch where we would highly recommend a trip with Wine Flies to get the most out of your day, or alternatively head to Franschhoek and join the Wine Tram, an alternative hop on hop off experience which is a lot of fun!

All in all, there’s certainly no shortage of things to keep you busy in Cape Town, so put the safari clothes away and dive into this metropolitan hub!

Undoubtedly, Victoria Falls is one of the most impressive natural sights on Earth and a must visit stop on your African adventure. It is a place to be truly awed by the nature’s beauty and incredible power.

While it is known worldwide as Victoria Falls, the wildly impressive waterfall is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya – translating roughly to ‘the smoke which thunders’ from the regional dialects Kololo or Lozi.

As soon as you make the trek to peer at this incredible natural wonder, you will understand why, as water crashes forcefully over the edge, sending smoke-like spray into the air and all over anyone standing anywhere close to the edge! In fact, you might want to take a poncho if the water is really high, or simply get wet and feel the full force of the falls!

Since word got out about the stunning beauty of the falls, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Africa. As a result, there has been rapid development and the Zimbabwe side of the falls has a friendly, vibrant town that is well set up for visitors.

The town features an almost endless selection of adrenaline, cultural and wildlife activities for visitors to enjoy once they’ve hiked to the Falls and (depending on the time of year and whether you’re willing to get a visa to Zambia) bathed in the Devil’s Pool which seems precariously close to the edge.

There’s something about ‘the smoke which thunders’ which seems to bring out the inner adrenaline junkie in most people. Therefore, Victoria Falls is simply brimming with adventure activities including bungee jumping, canyoneering, sky diving, or white water rafting for an exhilarating trip down the rapids.

Tourism is a huge industry in Victoria Falls, so the equipment is well maintained and very safe. Still, we won’t blame you if you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground! Luckily, there’s no shortage of other things to see and do in Victoria Falls.

One of the most popular, relaxing activities is to take a sunset cruise down the Zambezi aboard the Zambezi Explorer, taking in the beautiful views and just soaking up the atmosphere. Many of the tours include drinks, so you can even take it in with a refreshing beer or sparkling wine in-hand. The absolute best time to do the cruise is during the sunset, when the entire landscape is bathed in a beautiful golden light, and you get to witness what the fuss is all about when it comes to an African sunset.

Somewhat surprisingly given what a vast continent Africa is and how much distance there usually is between attractions, Victoria Falls is within easy day trip distance of Botswana’s most famous national park, Chobe. Just hop across the border for a combination of a river safari and a jeep safari in pursuit of the Big 5 and your quintessential African adventure.

The proximity of Chobe means that you can be back in time for dinner, which is a good thing given that there are many good options for even the pickiest foodie in Victoria Falls! For delicious, African inspired meals head for Lola’s Tapas where you can sample an eye-brow raising selection of African animals, or perhaps Mama Africa which serves hearty African fare in a fun, laidback environment with live African music in the evenings.

For a relaxing afternoon, you have to visit Stanley’s at the Victoria Falls Hotel. Here, at one of the most luxurious hotels in all of Zimbabwe, you can enjoy a delicious high tea with cakes and hot drinks (or a cheeky cocktail), all whilst taking in the stunning views out over the Falls themselves. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

We can also highly recommend dining at our favourite hotel – the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. The food in the restaurant (Makuwa-Kuwa) and the laidback bar (Buffalo Bar) is absolutely delicious, and the view over the waterhole is stunning – it is very likely you will spy some wildlife coming to drink. In the centre of town you can sample delicious cocktails at Three Monkeys, a converted railway carriage, who also serve great food at reasonable prices, or check out the Shearwater Cafe. For lunch with a view, you simply have to visit the Lookout Cafe for spectacular views of the gorge and Zambezi River.

For all the shopaholics out there, you will be pleased to know that another popular past-time in Victoria Falls is browsing the various markets where you can buy everything from colourful beaded jewellery to wooden and stone animal carvings and notes from Zimbabwe’s mega-inflation. Simply browsing the markets chatting to the sellers is a fun way to spend an afternoon, however to do prepare yourself for a pretty hard sell and don’t tell anyone you’ll be back unless you really mean it!

Now for the safety aspect…

The town of Victoria Falls has worked hard over the years to become a safe environment for tourists, employing tourism police and developing a strong tourist friendly infrastructure. This can be quite a surprise for visitors and as welcoming as it is, we would always advise caution when walking around town at night. Poverty is still an issue and corruption remains in existence, so avoid making yourself a tempting target where you can. Use the free hotel shuttles if they have them, stick together and if in doubt head into a hotel reception or restaurant and ask them to get you a taxi. We have never had any issues whatsoever, but being cautious and a sensible traveller helps to make sure it doesn’t!

Victoria Falls remains one of the highlights of the whole continent in our opinion, and is a firm favourite that we like to visit over and over again. From the beast that is the falls, to amazing safari’s just across the border in Botswana, to great food and views that seem endless…what are you waiting for?!
